Photographer Advice
Things to know before you book.
1. Make sure that your photographer will be at the wedding and reception for a period of time long enough to get pictures of everything you want (they don't leave before the cake cutting).
2. Most photographers include an engagement photo shoot in their price. This is just an hour or two in which the couple gets pictures wearing various outfits. These pictures can be used in the invitations at the wedding, or just given out as wallet pictures to loved ones.
3. Make sure that you don't pay for more than you need to. Bottom of page for details.
4. Make certain that if you like a photographer, that they will be the one at your wedding (get it in the contract). Sometimes photographers will send one of their students to a wedding if a bigger event comes up.
There are basically 3 schools of thought in wedding photography today. Each has a unique way of pricing and selling you your wedding pictures. Make sure that you pick the one that is best for you, or you could spend way more that what you wanted or needed to. The schools of thought are listed below.
1. The film method. The photographer uses film (not digital) to take pictures of your wedding. In this school of thought you pay a large sum of money up front, which will include the photographer for the night, proofs (4x6 pictures) of all of the photographs, and larger pictures which you select from the proofs. The pictures you select are priced high and you buy enough to spend the money your paid up front. The photographer retains ownership of the pictures, so if you want more pictures you will pay for them.
2. The digital method. All of the cameras used are digital. This is similar to the film method but at the end of the wedding (a couple weeks later) they give you a digital copy of the pictures. Also, the sum of money that is up front is considerably less and you get fewer pictures from the photographer, but you can have them printed yourself. Instead of receiving proofs from the photographer often a digital copy is given, such as a CD.
3. The rich photographer method. Named because the photographer makes out extremely well. The photographer used a digital camera, but sets up the payment and photographs similar to the film method, and does not give the newlyweds a digital copy of the pictures. Basically the photographer saves money by using a digital camera and passes the savings on himself.
